Summary and Description:
“Estimating is a powerful way to achieve project success or failure.”
In this class we will discuss the importance of estimates. Areas of focus include things such as:
- How botching an estimate (without correcting) can put a company out of business or ruin a project and how to avoid that!
- Why we do estimates and how to defend your estimates
- How to adjust your estimate to achieve project executives constraints
- Discuss the process from the “why”, to business analysis and generating requirements, to scoping a project
- Taking a WBS and turning it into a bottom up estimate
- Sequencing activities and CPM to arrive at your schedule
- How to use this information to determine a project’s contribution to the enterprise overhead and profit
- Adding appropriate contingencies and taxes to the estimate
- How the triple constraints effect your estimate…and more!
Our Speaker:
Anthony Guarneri is a project manager, business owner, and veteran. Right out of high school, Anthony enlisted in the USMC and had the great fortune to work in Reconnaissance, Surveillance, and Signal Intelligence under the NSA. People find Special Ops/Intel interesting and its applicability to project management and reporting. His next career was in (Fortune 500) Audio/Video Systems Integration before moving to Ithaca to start ASI. ASI performs residential and light commercial remodeling and energy retrofits. Currently Anthony is launching “The Grid Squares” to perform microgrid development and support. From Anthony, “In my free time I spend time with the family at home, practice kung-fu, work on the house, and live gratefully.”
Anthony has completed 332 projects to date and done about 2,500+ estimates. He is also developing a system for predicting project outcomes. He calls it using creativity, experience, and intuition to predict project outcomes. He says, "It’s a working title. It’s sort of like a combination of taking all the experiences we have of how projects go, taking the current project situation and parts into consideration, and then using a tool I am developing to brainstorm what is likely to happen. It’s a mix of the tools used in Roschach, reading bones (VooDoo), meditation, sensory deprivation, etc… It’s pretty interesting. You know how basically nothing surprises you anymore on projects besides how nothing continues to surprise you? This tool helps you arrive at those realizations a little earlier.”
“I recently learned that NYSERDA PON 3044 Microgrid Competition selected 2 of my 3 microgrid projects (Binghamton and Syracuse) to be part of those receiving a $1M grant from NYSERDA to go to the next stage of the competition. This was in part achieved through estimating”.
