About the Ithaca Branch
The Ithaca branch grew from a group of project managers from Cornell University that started meeting two years ago. The organization was called the Project Management Special Interest Group and brought project managers from across the campus together to learn and collaborate. As the group matured, they decided a formal relationship with PMI would be beneficial.
To date, opportunities to get directly involved with PMI-related activities have been geographically challenged, with the closest Chapter being a minimum of an hour away for most of our members. With regular attendance of 15-20 people, the group began to express interest in aligning more closely with one of the local PMI chapters so that we could expand the possibilities for bringing in valuable programs as well as providing our members more opportunities for involvement in PMI activities (thereby also helping our PMPs receive PDUs).
In the Ithaca-based group, we currently have approximately 15-20 PMI members, 10-15 PMI-Rochester Chapter members, and 16 PMPs. We welcome anyone from around the Ithaca region that is interested in project management to get involved!

April 20, 2011
Thirty one project managers from the Ithaca area attended the second Rochester PMI – Ithaca Branch meeting. We were fortunate to welcome folks from SUNY – Oneonta, CBORD, and Cayuga Medical Center. The group enjoyed a lunch and a presentation by featured author and speaker Mark Kozak-Holland, known for his “Lessons from History” series where he uses historical events to correlate to today’s project challenges.
Topic: "The History of Project Management -What can we learn from the ancient Project Managers?"
Summary: The Pyramid of Giza, the Parthenon, and the Coliseum are all great historical projects from the past 4 millennia. When we look back we tend to look at these as great architectural or engineering works. Project management tends to be overlooked, and yet the core principles were used extensively in these projects.
This presentation took a look at the history of project management, how it evolved, and presents some quite remarkable results; namely, that project management did not just appear in the last 100 years but has been a steady evolution for at least 4,500 years. We walked away with new insights and an interest to look at these projects more closely for lessons that are applicable as much today as when the project was initiated. Paying attention to how historical projects and emerging technologies of the past solved complex problems of the day provides some very valuable insights into how to solve today's more challenging business problems.
