The Risk Management CompassLevel: Foundation through Intermediate
As project managers, we are often expected to have a crystal ball which allows us to see into the future. Uncertainties are for certain in projects and they will impact the achievement of project objectives. They include threats which can hurt our project and opportunities which will help us work smarter and could save us time and money. Ultimately, we want to deliver a risk process on ALL projects to ensure that we maximize the good and minimize the bad – and we want to do it by using a consistent approach.
This interactive workshop will include small and large group discussions and activities. These will give you an opportunity to formulate a tailored process of risk management within your current work and/or project environment. Those attending will be given an array of practical tools, tips, and strategies that can be used to enhance a current risk process. They can also be effectively used in the development of a new strategy for your project or organization.
You will leave this workshop with enough confidence to say “I can do risk management in my project TODAY”, and with the skills needed to do it well. The workshop participant guide will provide “practical pages” including templates, references, process tips, and a take-along toolbox to assist you. In addition to earning 7 PDU’s, those who attend can expect to have fun while learning useful information and working with others who share their interest in developing competence in Project Management.

What will be covered in the workshop?
Module 1: “That’s Life”: An Introduction and Overview: We will review our role as risk management leaders. We will discuss two different views of projects based on different leadership perspectives. A review of the “direction” of risk will prepare you to navigate through this topic.
Module 2: “Upward Coaching”: When an opportunity comes along to “sell” risk management to your Senior Leaders, are you prepared? Can you speak confidently about the benefits of risk management? This module will help you prepare your thoughts as you become a “change agent” for improved risk management practices in your organization.
Modules 3 – 8: “Risk Process and Approach”: A practical, proactive, and systematic approach will be learned by leveraging PMI’s Risk Management Process Steps: Risk Management Planning, Risk Identification, Risk Qualification, Risk Quantification, Risk Response Planning, Risk Monitoring and Control.
